# QR codes for a market stall

> A market stall runs on three laminated sheets: a payment QR for your region's scheme — UPI, PIX, PayNow or an EU EPC code — a price list with product codes, and a follow code. Laminate matt, weight everything against wind, and remember a customer cannot scan a code shown on your own phone with that phone.

## Payment first — pick your region's scheme

The stall use-case that pays for itself immediately is taking payment without card
hardware. Which QR to print depends entirely on where you trade:

| Region | Scheme | Generator |
|---|---|---|
| India | UPI — universal, instant, no merchant fees at typical stall scale | [UPI code](/upi-qr-code); the [small-shop guide](/docs/payments/upi-qr-for-a-small-shop) covers setup |
| Brazil | PIX — instant, near-universal | [PIX code](/pix-qr-code); details in [PIX for small business](/docs/payments/pix-qr-for-small-business) |
| Singapore | PayNow — see [the PayNow guide](/docs/payments/paynow-qr-singapore) | Bank app export |
| SEPA / EU | [EPC QR](/epc-qr-code) initiates a credit transfer in banking apps — useful, though not tap-speed like the schemes above | [EPC format](/docs/payments/epc-qr-code-format) |
| UK / US | No universal bank-QR scheme — a payment-link QR (PayPal, or your processor's link) is the honest fallback, fees included | [PayPal code](/paypal-qr-code) |

Generate the code **on this side of the browser** — UseQR builds payment payloads
client-side, so your VPA or key never leaves your device — print it large (**≥ 5 cm** for
a code scanned across a stall table), and tape a copy at eye level and one flat on the
table. A static amount-less code lets the customer type the total; the trade-offs are on
[static vs dynamic UPI](/docs/payments/static-vs-dynamic-upi-qr), and the
scam patterns worth knowing (code swapped overnight, fake "payment failed" screens) on
[UPI security](/docs/payments/upi-qr-security-and-common-scams).

## The same-phone caveat

The classic stall mistake: showing a payment or menu code **on your own phone** to a
customer — who then cannot scan it, because their camera is in their pocket and yours is
displaying the code. It works, but only when the *customer's* phone does the scanning of
*your* screen, with your brightness up. It fails completely when a customer tries to
open your catalogue on the same phone that displays the code — the
[same-phone problem](/docs/scanning/how-to-scan-a-qr-code-on-the-same-phone) in the
wild. Paper beats screens at a stall: no battery, no brightness, no queue for your phone.

## The price-list-with-codes sheet

The second sheet that earns its lamination: your price list with a small code per
product line — each linking that product's page for ingredients, care, or ordering the
size you did not haul to the market. One A4 sheet, codes at **≥ 2 cm** (customers hold
the sheet), generated together with [the bulk tool](/bulk). It turns browsing time in a
queue into catalogue time, and the [Etsy-seller kit](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-etsy-sellers)
— care cards, thank-you cards — carries the same buyers home.

Third sheet: one follow code — mailing list over social, as with
[pop-ups](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-a-pop-up-shop), because the stall's location
changes and your list is how regulars find you.

## Weatherproofing, briefly

A market stall is outdoor print on a budget:

- **Matt lamination** — gloss pouches glare in direct sun exactly when markets happen;
the physics is on [glossy surfaces](/docs/print/qr-codes-on-glossy-surfaces-and-glare).
- Laminated sheets survive rain and wipe clean; unlaminated inkjet dies in one shower.
For codes stuck to crates and boards, [weatherproof stickers](/docs/print/weatherproof-qr-code-stickers)
  are the durable option.
- **Wind is the real enemy** — clip or weight every sheet; a payment code face-down on
the ground takes your card-free revenue with it.
- Test-scan at the stall in morning light and afternoon glare, not just at home.

## FAQ

### Which payment QR code should a market stall use?
Your region's bank-transfer scheme: UPI in India, PIX in Brazil, PayNow in Singapore, an EPC transfer code in the SEPA area. In the UK and US there is no universal scheme, so a payment-link QR from PayPal or your processor is the fallback.

### Why shouldn't I show my payment QR on my phone?
A screen code only works when the customer scans your phone — it fails in sun glare, dies with your battery, and queues customers behind one device. A laminated printed code at eye level works all day for everyone at once.

### How do I make my stall signs survive the weather?
Matt lamination on every sheet, weatherproof stickers on crates and boards, and weights or clips against wind. Gloss lamination glares in sunlight, which is when markets operate, so choose matt.

### What size should a stall payment QR be?
At least 5 cm across for a code scanned over a stall table at about half a metre, following the ten-to-one distance rule. Put one at eye level and one flat by the till point.
