# How to make a QR code in Canva

> Canva has a built-in QR code app — search "QR code" in the Apps panel, paste a URL, and it drops the code into your design. It only encodes URLs, though. For WiFi, vCard, payments or styled codes, generate the code at UseQR, download PNG or SVG, and upload it to Canva like any image.

## 1. The built-in route (URLs only)

Canva ships a first-party QR code app:

1. Open your design and go to the **Apps** section of the editor panel.
2. Search for **QR code** and open Canva's own QR generator.
3. Paste the URL, generate, and the code drops onto the canvas as an image.

That is genuinely the fastest path when all you need is a link. Its limits are the reason
this page has four more sections: it encodes **URLs only** — no
WiFi, no [vCard](/vcard-qr-code), no UPI or other payment
formats — and styling control is thin compared to a dedicated generator.

## 2. The flexible route: generate outside, upload

For every other code type, or when you want module shapes, eye styles, a logo or exact
colours:

1. Build the code at UseQR — any of the 32 types, with styling — and download it.
   **PNG at high resolution** always uploads cleanly; SVG upload works on current Canva
   plans, and if your account rejects it, a [PNG at 300 DPI of the final printed size](/docs/how-to/how-to-make-a-high-resolution-qr-code)
   is the safe fallback.
2. In Canva: **Uploads → Upload files**, then drag the code into the design.
3. Resize from a **corner handle only** — dragging a side handle stretches one axis and a
   stretched QR code will not scan.

coloured Canva layouts without a white box — just make sure what shows through stays at
least 40% lighter than the modules.

## 3. Size it for the medium

Canva shows physical dimensions for print designs — use them. The code needs to be at
least **one tenth of the scanning distance** wide: 3.5 cm on a table-tent menu, 20 cm on a
poster read from 2 m. Check your case against the

size calculator, and never let a template shrink the code to fill a
decorative corner.

## 4. Respect the quiet zone inside the layout

Canva templates love tight, busy compositions. Keep a clear margin of **at least 4
modules** around the code — no text, borders, or background photography touching it. If
the template background is dark or patterned, put the code on a white rounded rectangle
rather than recolouring the code itself; the
[colour rules](/docs/design/qr-code-colors-that-scan) are unforgiving about light modules
on dark grounds.

## 5. Export and verify

For print, export as **PDF Print**; for screens, PNG. Then scan the exported file — not
the editor preview — with a phone, or upload it to the [validator](/validate). Canva's
export pipeline can recompress images, and verification takes seconds against a reprint's
hours.

## Gotchas

- **Canva's QR app codes are static URL codes** — they never expire, but they are not
  editable after printing either. Same as any static code.
- **Effects are dangerous**: shadows, transparency sliders and filters applied to the code
  layer eat contrast at module edges.
- **JPG export** softens module edges; prefer PNG or PDF for anything carrying a code.
- **Team templates**: if the code lives in a shared template, teammates can move or resize
  it — lock the element after placing it.
