# QR code for a podcast

> Podcasts have no visual surface, and cover art fails the arithmetic — at the 56–60 px thumbnail size where art is actually seen, a QR code's modules are under 2 px and cannot resolve. Put codes on promo cards, stickers, event banners and slides instead, pointing at one follow page listing every app.

## The cover-art myth, with arithmetic

The recurring idea — put a QR code in the podcast cover art — fails twice, and the first failure is pure arithmetic.

Cover art is uploaded at up to 3000 × 3000 px, but that is not where it is seen. In app lists and search results it renders at roughly **56–60 px** on a phone. A modest version 3 code is 29 modules across, plus the mandatory 4-module [quiet zone](/glossary/quiet-zone) each side: 37 modules. At 60 px that is about **1.6 px per module** — decoders need roughly 3 px per module as a working floor, so the code cannot resolve. It is noise at every size the art is actually displayed.

The second failure is the familiar one: even in the full-screen player, where the art might reach 300 px and the code technically could scan, the listener is looking at it **on the phone that would do the scanning**. Same-phone, [same problem](/docs/scanning/how-to-scan-a-qr-code-on-the-same-phone). Keep the cover art as art.

## Where a podcast QR code works

A podcast has no visual surface of its own, so the code lives on everything around the show:

- **Promo cards and [stickers](/qr-codes-on/stickers)** — handed out at events, slipped into orders, stuck on laptops by fans.
- **Event banners and [backdrops](/qr-codes-on/banners-and-backdrops)** at live shows and festival stages, sized for the room — a code read from 3 m needs to be about 30 cm wide.
- **Conference slides**, if hosts speak — the closing slide is prime real estate.
- **Cross-promo print**: flyers in aligned venues (a hospitality podcast's card by a café till), guest swaps where each show appears on the other's merch.

Write the reason next to the code — "Every Tuesday: 30 minutes on X" pulls better than "Listen to our podcast"; the [call-to-action page](/docs/marketing/qr-code-call-to-action) covers the wording.

## The destination: never a single platform

Roughly half your potential listeners will not use whichever app you link. Point the code at **one follow page that lists every player** — Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, RSS — and let the visitor pick:

- Aggregator services (the pod.link style of smart link) generate such a page from your feed.
- Better for long-lived print: a `/listen` page on **your own domain**, so the destination survives any third-party service and you can [re-point it later](/docs/how-to/how-to-change-what-a-qr-code-points-to) without reprinting.

Point print at the **show**, not an episode — episodes age, promo cards circulate for years. Episode codes are only for time-boxed promotion.

## Before printing

Decode the final artwork with the [validator](/validate), at final size, after the designer has styled it. A batch of misprinted stickers is a silent, unmeasurable loss — nobody tells you a code did not scan.

## FAQ

### Should I put a QR code on my podcast cover art?
No. Cover art is mostly seen at thumbnail sizes around 56–60 px, where a code's modules are under 2 px and cannot be decoded — and in the full-screen player the listener is holding the phone that would scan it. Put codes on physical promo instead.

### What should a podcast QR code link to?
A follow page listing every platform — Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, RSS — rather than one app. Use a smart-link aggregator, or better, a /listen page on your own domain so printed codes survive service changes and can be re-pointed.

### How do people share a podcast with a QR code?
Print it: promo cards, stickers, banners at live shows, a slide when hosts speak. The code removes the search-and-spell-the-name step, which is where word-of-mouth podcast recommendations usually die.

### Should the code go to the latest episode or the show?
The show. Print outlives any episode, and a follow is worth more than a single listen. Reserve episode-level codes for time-boxed campaigns where the print is genuinely disposable.
