# QR codes for social media — what works and what is absurd

> A QR code earns its place where print meets a phone — packaging, posters, counters, badges, merch pointing at a profile URL. It is pointless inside a post viewed on the phone that would scan it; use a tappable link there. Print one code, to one destination you control.

## The one test that decides everything

A QR code is a bridge from a physical surface to a phone. Social media is consumed on that same phone. So every "QR codes for social media" decision reduces to one test: **is the code somewhere other than the viewer's own screen?**

If yes — packaging, a poster, a counter card, a t-shirt — a code works, because print cannot be tapped. If no — a post, a story, a reel seen in the feed — the viewer would have to [scan the code on the phone they are holding](/docs/scanning/how-to-scan-a-qr-code-on-the-same-phone), which means saving a screenshot first. Use the platform's tappable link instead.

## Placement reality table

| Placement | QR code? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Product packaging | **Yes** | high dwell, phone free to scan |
| Poster, flyer, shop window | **Yes** | print has no other route to a profile |
| Business card, name badge | **Yes** | the classic networking case |
| Merch — t-shirts, totes, stickers | **Yes** | worn print is still print |
| In-feed post or story | **No** | viewed on the scanning phone — use the link sticker |
| Reel or TikTok | **Mostly no** | [narrow exceptions exist](/docs/marketing/qr-code-in-a-reel-or-tiktok) |
| YouTube video description | **No** | it is already a link medium |
| Livestream overlay | **Sometimes** | serves desktop and TV viewers — see the [overlay how-to](/docs/how-to/how-to-add-a-qr-code-to-a-livestream-overlay) |

## Native profile codes vs a plain URL code

Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, TikTok and Snapchat have all shipped an in-app profile QR at some point; where the feature lives moves between app versions. The more important split is what the code contains. Some native codes are ordinary URLs any camera can read. Others — Snapchat's Snapcodes are the clearest example — are proprietary patterns only that platform's own scanner understands.

A plain URL code to your profile, made with any [URL generator](/url), reads in every camera app, downloads as an SVG you keep, and is not styled in another brand's colours. For print, that is usually the better tool.

## One code, not five

A grid of five platform codes on one poster forces a choice the reader will not make, and codes printed close together can even interfere with detection. Print one code and send it either to your single most important profile or to a hub page listing all of them — the [social QR generator](/social) builds both, and [one QR code for all your socials](/docs/marketing/one-qr-code-for-all-your-socials) covers the trade-offs.

## Make the destination survive the print run

Profile URLs live exactly as long as your handle. Rename @yourbrand and every printed `instagram.com/yourbrand` code dies silently — there is no redirect from an abandoned handle, and the old name can eventually be claimed by someone else. For anything with a long print life, point the code at a path on a domain you control and redirect from there; [how to change what a QR code points to](/docs/how-to/how-to-change-what-a-qr-code-points-to) explains the pattern.

Whatever you print, decode the final artwork with the [validator](/validate) first, and write a specific reason to scan next to it — "Follow for Friday drops" beats a bare code.

## FAQ

### Should I put a QR code in my Instagram posts?
No. Posts are viewed on the phone that would do the scanning, so a code there forces a screenshot detour. Use the platform's tappable links and stickers in-app, and save QR codes for print, packaging and screens other than the viewer's own.

### Do QR codes actually help grow a social following?
They work where print meets an idle phone: packaging, posters, counter cards, badges, merch. The code removes the search-and-find-the-right-account step, which is where most "follow us" requests die. They do nothing inside the feed itself, where a tappable link is strictly better.

### Is a platform's built-in QR better than a plain URL code?
For print, a plain URL code is usually safer: it scans in any camera app, while some native codes — Snapcodes especially — need that platform's own scanner. Native codes remain convenient for in-person, phone-to-phone follows.

### What happens to my QR code if I change my handle?
Every printed code pointing at the old profile URL breaks, with no redirect. Either keep the handle for the life of the print run, or point codes at a URL on your own domain that redirects to the current profile.
