# QR codes for agriculture

## Assume no signal

The defining constraint of on-farm QR is coverage: the yard may have 4G and the far
field none. Which payloads survive depends on whether they are self-contained:

- **Text payloads decode with zero bars.** A code on the baler encoding the greasing
  points and torque settings as plain text works anywhere, forever —
  [offline-capable codes](/docs/how-to/how-to-make-a-qr-code-work-offline) covers the

- **Geo coordinates decode offline** too; the maps app needs cached tiles to display
  them, but the position itself transfers.
- **URL codes need coverage at the point of scan.** Keep them for the yard, the shop
  and the gate — and keep [equipment-manual PDFs](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-product-manuals)
  linked from codes scanned where WiFi reaches, not mid-field.

## Tags that survive the farm

Sun, rain, muck and the pressure washer kill ordinary labels. Use
[weatherproof stickers](/docs/print/weatherproof-qr-code-stickers) on laminated UV-stable
stock — realistic outdoor life **2–5 years** before [UV fading](/docs/print/uv-fading-and-qr-codes)
erodes contrast — and check tags at annual servicing. One honest boundary on livestock:
official EID ear tags are the regulated identity in most jurisdictions, so a QR tag on a
pen, hutch or passport wallet is a **supplementary management tag** linking your own
records; it never replaces the statutory one.

## The farm-gate stall

A payment code beside the honesty box takes the region's local rail —
[UPI for a small stall](/docs/payments/upi-qr-for-a-small-shop) in India, an
[EPC transfer code](/epc-qr-code) in much of Europe — and a provenance code on the
label does what commodity shelves cannot: names the field, the variety and the picking
date. Laminate both; stall signage lives outdoors.

## FAQ

### Do QR codes work in fields without mobile signal?

Only self-contained ones. Text and coordinate payloads decode entirely offline because
the data is inside the code. URL codes need coverage at the moment of scanning, so keep
them for the yard and shop and encode critical field-side information as text.

### What QR label lasts outdoors on farm equipment?

Laminated UV-stable weatherproof stock, giving roughly 2–5 years before UV fading and
abrasion degrade contrast. Mount tags where they can be wiped clean, away from constant
direct sun where possible, and replace them as part of annual servicing.

### Can a QR code replace livestock ear tags?

No. Official EID tags are the legal identity of the animal in most jurisdictions. QR
tags earn their keep as supplementary management labels — on pens, passports or record
folders — linking your own husbandry records to the animal or group.
