# QR codes for cinemas

> Cinema QR codes belong on one-sheets — one code per film, linking trailer and showtimes — and at concessions for loyalty enrolment. The venue constraint is light: lobbies are dim and posters sit in backlit cases, which behave like screens, so never use light-on-dark codes there.

## One film, one code

A generic "visit our website" code on every poster wastes the medium. Give each one-sheet
its own code linking a page for *that film*: trailer at the top, this cinema's screening
times below it, book-now beneath that. The film title is already the poster's job; the
code's job is collapsing "looks interesting" into a booking in one scan. Generate the set
per programme cycle [in bulk](/docs/how-to/how-to-make-qr-codes-in-bulk) — a dozen films,
a dozen codes, refreshed as titles rotate. Add a [calendar code](/calendar-qr-code) on
coming-soon posters so the release date lands in a phone's diary.

## The backlit lightbox is a screen

Cinema posters live in illuminated cases, and a backlit code behaves like a
[code on a monitor](/docs/scanning/scanning-a-qr-code-off-a-monitor), not print: the
image is emissive, the glass front reflects every lobby downlight. Three rules:

- **Dark modules on a light background, always.** Designers reaching for a
  [light-on-dark code](/docs/design/why-light-on-dark-qr-codes-fail) to match a dark
one-sheet produce an [inverted symbol](/docs/design/inverted-qr-codes) many scanners
refuse — put the code in a white panel instead.
- Position the code **low in the case**, below the typical reflection line of ceiling
  lights.
- Size for the walk-past: **4–6 cm** minimum for the 50–80 cm a browsing visitor stands
  from the case.

The lobby itself is deliberately dim, which lengthens camera exposures —
[low-light scanning](/docs/scanning/qr-scanning-in-low-light) is another reason to
oversize rather than tuck a 2 cm code into the credits block.

## Concessions and loyalty

The concession queue is captive and bored: a loyalty-enrolment code at the till converts
better than any email campaign, and a [coupon code](/coupon-qr-code) on the ticket or
receipt ("free upgrade next visit") gives a reason to return. Keep the enrolment form to
one screen — the queue is moving.

## FAQ

### What should a QR code on a film poster link to?

That film's page: trailer, this cinema's showtimes, and booking — in that order. One
code per one-sheet, regenerated as the programme changes. A code that opens the cinema's
homepage makes the visitor repeat the search the poster already answered.

### Why do QR codes on backlit posters fail to scan?

Two reasons: designers invert them to light-on-dark to suit dark artwork, which many
scanners reject, and the glass front throws reflections across the code. Keep codes dark
on white, low in the case, and at least 4–6 cm.

### Do QR codes work in a dim cinema lobby?

Yes, but low light forces longer camera exposures, so small codes blur. Oversize the code
relative to daylight rules and keep contrast maximal. Backlit cases actually help here —
the illumination is the one advantage of the lightbox.
