# QR codes for parks and trails

> On a trail, assume no mobile signal. A QR code still decodes offline, so payloads that carry their own content — plain text and geo coordinates — keep working where a URL cannot load. Put safety information in the code itself, mount codes in engraved metal, and never sticker natural features.

## Design for no signal

Decoding happens entirely on the phone — the camera reads the pattern with
[no network involved](/docs/basics/how-do-qr-codes-work). What happens next depends on the
payload, and on a ridge with zero bars that difference is everything:

So the trailhead board can carry a URL code for the full trail guide, but anything
safety-relevant — route summary, emergency numbers, water sources — belongs in a plain-text
payload or printed on the board itself. Text holds up to **4,296 alphanumeric characters**,
far more than a trail summary needs. See

## Emergency location at the marker

A trail marker that prints its grid reference *and* carries a geo code gives a walker two
ways to tell rescue services where they are: read the printed coordinates over the phone,
or open the pin and read the numbers from the map app. The code duplicates the printed
coordinates; it must never replace them, because a dead battery removes the digital route.

## Mounting that survives the outdoors

Stickers and laminated paper fail within seasons in full weather.
[Engraved metal](/qr-codes-on/engraved-metal) or anodised aluminium plates last for years —
the code is physically cut or etched, so there is no ink to

## Leave no trace applies to codes

Mount on posts, boards and existing infrastructure only. Stickers on rocks, trees and
built heritage are vandalism with a URL on it, and land managers remove them. If your
organisation does not manage the land, ask the one that does.

## Sizing

Trailhead boards are read at arm's length: **3–5 cm**. Marker-post codes are read from
close up: **2–3 cm** engraved is fine. Keep the [quiet zone](/glossary/quiet-zone) clear of
the plate edge and fixing screws.

Two codes serve better than one: a URL code for the full guide, scanned in the car park
where there is often signal, and a plain-text code with the route summary, distances and
emergency numbers that works anywhere on the trail.

### How do you make trail QR codes last outdoors?

Engrave or etch them into metal rather than printing. An engraved anodised-aluminium plate
has no ink to fade and shrugs off rain, frost and sun for years. Inspect codes on your
normal maintenance round and test them with a phone.
