QR codes for care instructions on apparel and textiles
A care label QR code works on printed satin or polyester labels down to about 1.5 cm, but woven labels cannot resolve modules finely enough — put the code on a printed insert or hang tag instead. The code supplements the mandated care symbols and carries video guides, repair advice and material provenance.
The physical problem comes first
Care labels are the tightest real estate a QR code is ever asked to fit. The usable area on a standard garment care label is roughly 2.5 × 4 cm, shared with fibre content and care symbols in however many languages the market requires. Whether a code can live there depends entirely on the label construction:

Woven labels are the trap. The weave itself is the image, and module edges come out ragged; combined with fabric flex and fraying, scan rates fall off badly. If the garment uses woven labels, put the code on the hang tag or a printed care insert, and accept that hang tags are cut off — a printed satin label sewn in as a second label is the durable option. What goes behind the code
The care symbols themselves are mandated on the label in most markets and are not what the code is for. The code carries what symbols cannot:
- Video care guides — how to actually wash a wool coat, reproof a waxed jacket, dry knitwear flat. This is the highest-value content for premium garments.
- Repair — spare buttons, repair tutorials, repair-service booking. Increasingly a brand differentiator.
- Material provenance — fibre origin, certifications, factory list.
- Resale support — authenticity and spec details that keep value in the second-hand market, related to product authentication.
- End of life — recycling and take-back routes.
One code, one landing page per style, sections in that order of likely intent. Point it at a stable path on your own domain — garments live for years and pass between owners, so the permanence rules apply.
The DPP is coming to textiles
Under the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, textiles are among the priority categories in current EU planning for the Digital Product Passport — a per-product data record reached through a data carrier on the item, which will commonly be a QR code. Timelines are still being set through delegated acts, but the direction is clear enough to act on: a brand adding care-label codes now should structure them so the same code can later resolve to DPP data — which argues for GS1 Digital Link style identifiers rather than ad-hoc URLs, and for per-style (eventually per-item) identification from the start.

Can you put a QR code on a woven care label?
Not reliably. Woven jacquard labels cannot resolve module edges below about a millimetre, and fabric flex makes it worse. Use a printed satin label, a heat-transfer print or a hang tag instead, and test after washing.
