QR codes for nutrition information
The printed nutrition panel stays on the pack; a QR code adds what it cannot hold — nutrition per realistic portion sizes, diet and intolerance filters, and full micronutrient data. Industry experience is that nutrition codes are scanned by a small, highly motivated minority, so design for depth per scan, not volume.
Same compliance line as allergens
The printed nutrition declaration is mandatory in most markets — the EU nutrition declaration, the US Nutrition Facts panel — and a QR code does not replace it. What the label cannot say
The printed panel is standardised per 100 g and per a single defined serving. Real questions are messier, and the linked page can answer them:
- Realistic portions — a serving calculator: "I ate half the pot" or "two biscuits", with the panel recalculated. This is the single most useful nutrition feature a page can add over print.
- Full micronutrients — the label mandates a short list; the page can carry the complete analysed profile, amino acids, fatty-acid breakdown, and the analysis date.
- Diet and intolerance filters — suitability flags with reasoning: vegan, low-FODMAP, diabetic-relevant glycaemic detail. Print has no room for the why; the page does.
- As-prepared values — cooked versus dry weight, made up with whole versus skimmed milk. Frequent confusion, easy to solve interactively.
- Recipe context — per-portion values when the product is an ingredient in the brand's own recipes.
The "smart label" pattern — a per-product information page reached from an on-pack code, carrying nutrition, ingredient and sourcing depth — is an established industry approach in grocery, and it works best when one code leads to one page with tabbed sections rather than separate codes per topic. Packs are busy; one code, well labelled, beats three.
Honest expectations about scan volume
Industry experience with on-pack information codes is consistent: a small minority of buyers ever scan, and those who do are highly motivated — managing a condition, following a strict diet, or researching a first purchase. There is no defensible universal percentage to quote, and this page will not invent one; what matters is the shape. Design for it:
- Depth per scan beats breadth of appeal. The scanner wants the full data, fast — not a brand video.

- No gates. A cookie wall or app prompt in front of nutrition data reads as hiding something.
Practical notes
Place the code adjacent to the printed nutrition panel, labelled "Scan for full nutrition and portion calculator", at ≥ 2 × 2 cm and clear of seams per the packaging rules. Keep the URL a stable per-product path on your own domain — pantry goods are scanned years after printing. If the pack already carries a GS1 Digital Link code for retail, resolve the nutrition page from that same code rather than adding a second symbol, and verify the final artwork decodes at print size.
