Can a QR code replace the printed manual?
Usually the answer is a hybrid, not a replacement. Safety warnings, regulated instructions and everything needed to reach a working state should stay on paper; a QR code carries the full manual, troubleshooting and updates. Dropping paper entirely saves print cost but excludes customers without phones, signal or confident eyesight.
The decision, not the mechanics

Against that: the linked manual is searchable, translatable, updatable after discovering an error, and can carry video — genuine advantages a booklet cannot match.
The hybrid that usually wins
The pattern most large manufacturers have converged on:
- A printed quick-start — safety warnings, setup to working state, in pictures more than words. Typically 2–8 pages instead of 96.
- A QR code on the quick-start and on the product — full manual, troubleshooting, firmware notes, spares and support. At ≥ 2 × 2 cm, labelled with what it opens.
- Paper on request — an offer, stated in the quick-start, to post a full printed manual free of charge. This is cheap (few ask), answers the accessibility objection, and is the condition under which several regulatory regimes accept digital-first instructions.
The saving is still large — the difference between an 8-page and a 96-page document across every unit and language — without betting safety or compliance on a phone being present. Verify the printed code decodes at final size before the run, because a quick-start whose code fails strands exactly the customers who most needed the full manual.
