How to put a QR code on packaging
Put the code on a flat panel at least 10 mm from folds, edges and seams, sized 2.5 to 4 cm for hand-held scanning, printed dark on light with error correction Q or H so creases and scuffs stay within the damage budget. Retail products should also consider GS1 Digital Link.
Where in the dieline
The single biggest packaging-specific decision is position, because a box is a flat print that becomes a 3D object:
- One flat panel only. A code crossing a fold, edge or glue seam is broken by construction. Keep the entire code plus quiet zone at least 10 mm from every crease line in the dieline.
- Not the crumple zones. Corners and the areas around handles take the scuffs in transit. Centre-of-panel survives.
- Away from the retail barcode. Give the EAN/UPC and the QR code clear separation so neither camera nor till scanner grabs the wrong symbol.
- On cylinders (jars, tubes, cans), curvature caps the code width — the working limits are in cylindrical packaging.
Think about which panel faces the customer at the moment you want the scan: back panel for the in-hand read (ingredients, instructions), front only if the scan is the product story.
Size, contrast, error correction
- Size: packaging is scanned in the hand, at 20–40 cm — so 2.5–4 cm covers it under the 10:1 rule, and never below the 2 × 2 cm print floor. Confirm your payload with the size calculator.
- Contrast: dark modules on a light substrate, ≥ 40% luminance difference. On kraft board, black on unbleached brown usually passes but measure it — and beware white ink builds, which print unevenly.
- Error correction: Q or H. Packaging gets creased, scuffed, taped and shrink-wrapped; the damage budget of Q (25%) or H (30%) is what keeps the code working at the end of the logistics chain, not just on the proof.
- Corrugated and uncoated stocks spread ink; module edges fatten. The compensation is larger modules, covered in ink spread and dot gain.
What should it point at?
Packaging outlives campaigns. Encode a URL on a domain you control with a stable
path (brand.com/p/product-name), and change what that page shows server-side — not a
deep link into an ecommerce platform whose URL structure changes annually. The strategic

The GS1 note for retail products
If your product is sold at retail, one code may need to serve consumers and the supply chain. GS1 Digital Link encodes your GTIN inside an ordinary web URL, so a single QR code can open your product page for a shopper while carrying the identifier tills and scanners understand — the industry is actively migrating 2D codes to the point of sale under GS1's "Sunrise 2027" initiative. Prove it before the print run
Fold a physical mock-up from the proof, then scan the assembled box — flat proofs hide fold problems. Scuff a sample deliberately and scan again; that is your error-correction margin being spent as intended.
