Bleed, trim and safe area for QR codes
Keep the QR code and its full four-module quiet zone inside the safe area — at least 3 mm inside the trim line — and never let either run into bleed. Guillotines drift ±1–2 mm, and on an 85 × 55 mm business card that drift lands exactly on a quiet zone placed at the edge.
The three zones of a print file
- Bleed: artwork extended beyond the final size — typically 3 mm on each edge — so background colours run to the cut edge without white slivers. Bleed is sacrificial: it is designed to be cut off.
- Trim: the intended final edge, marked by crop marks.
- Safe area: usually 3 mm inside trim. Nothing that must survive intact — text, logos, codes — may cross it.
The rule for QR codes is absolute: the code and its entire quiet zone live inside the safe area. Backgrounds may bleed; codes never do. A code is the one element on the page where losing a millimetre is not a cosmetic defect but a functional one.
Why the safe area exists: cutters drift
Commercial jobs are printed on large sheets, stacked hundreds high, and guillotined through the stack. Sheets shift microscopically as the blade passes, registration varies between press and cutter, and gang-run jobs share sheets with other people's artwork. The industry absorbs all of it with a stated cutting tolerance of ±1–2 mm — completely routine, and invisible on artwork designed for it.
Now do the QR arithmetic. The quiet zone is 4 modules wide; on a business-card code with 1 mm modules, that is a 4 mm margin. Place the code flush to the trim line and a 2 mm cut drift eats half the quiet zone on one side — enough to break scanning on many readers, the failure documented in quiet zone too small and cropped by a printer. The same drift through the middle of a paragraph costs nothing. Codes near edges fail at the cutter, not the press.
Worked example: 85 × 55 mm business card
A short-URL version 2 code (25 modules) at 1 mm modules is 25 mm square, 33 mm with quiet zone. On an 85 × 55 mm card:
- Safe area: 79 × 49 mm (3 mm in from each trim edge).
- The 33 mm footprint fits with room to spare — if its outer edge (quiet zone included) starts at least 3 mm inside trim. Closest legal position: code edge at 7 mm from trim (3 mm safe margin + 4 mm quiet zone), which still leaves 45 mm of card width for text.
- What does not fit: the same code "anchored to the corner for style" at 1 mm from trim. It will scan on the proof and fail on some fraction of the cut run — the worst kind of defect, intermittent by stack position.

Imposition: the gutter is a double trim
When many cards are ganged on a sheet, neighbouring units share cut lines, and gutters between them carry bleed from both sides. Every internal cut has the same ±1–2 mm tolerance as the outer edges — so the safe-area rule applies to every unit on the sheet, not just the sheet's perimeter. If you supply an imposed sheet yourself (or a sticker layout), keep each code 3 mm plus quiet zone from each unit's own trim, and let the imposition software handle gutters rather than shrinking them by hand.

FAQ
Can a QR code go in the bleed area?
No. Bleed exists to be cut off, and anything in it may be partially or wholly removed. Only backgrounds belong in bleed; the code and its quiet zone must sit fully inside the safe area.
How far from the edge should a QR code be?
At least the safe margin plus the quiet zone: typically 3 mm inside the trim line, plus the four-module quiet zone — about 7 mm from trim for a business-card code with 1 mm modules.
Why was my QR code cut off by the printer?
Cutting tolerance. Guillotines drift ±1–2 mm through stacked sheets, so artwork placed against the trim line loses material on some copies. The proof looks fine; a fraction of the run fails.
Does the quiet zone count as part of the safe area requirement?
Yes — treat code plus quiet zone as one inviolable block. A trimmed quiet zone breaks scanning as surely as trimmed modules, because decoders need clear space on all four sides.
