QR codes on Dymo and Brother label printers
Consumer label printers print reliable QR codes within hard limits — about 300 dpi on Dymo LabelWriter and Brother QL machines, 180 dpi on entry P-touch tape printers, and roughly 9–18 mm of printable height on 12–24 mm tape. That caps capacity — on 12 mm tape even a version 1 code is marginal.
Know which machine you have
Three families behave very differently:

Direct thermal paper labels fade in heat and light within months — the mechanics are on direct thermal vs thermal transfer. P-touch is the odd one out and the durability winner: the print is fused under a clear laminate layer, so TZe labels shrug off water, abrasion and sunlight for years — the right choice for asset tags, plant tags and cable labels.
Tape width sets the code budget
TZe tape prints roughly 70–75% of its width — the rest is margin the mechanism cannot reach:

On an entry 180 dpi P-touch the dot is 0.141 mm, so a 4-dot module is 0.56 mm — 18 mm of print height carries only a version 1 symbol. The practical rule for tape printers: 24 mm tape, shortest possible payload. A long URL that pushes the symbol to version 6+ will not fit at scannable module sizes — why longer URLs make denser codes — so check the pairing in the size calculator before committing a roll.
App QR features vs importing an image
Dymo Connect and Brother P-touch Editor both have built-in QR objects. Use them when they work: like a Zebra's native command, the software renders modules onto the printer's dot grid directly. Two honest caveats: the built-in objects expose little control (error correction level is often fixed or hidden), and some versions render QR at the object's on-screen size rather than a dot-exact size — always scan a test label.
Importing a PNG works well if the pixel count maps to whole dots: generate the code at
exact final pixels — e.g. https://useqr.app/api/v1/qr?data=…&size=132 for a 33-module
symbol at 4 px per module — and place it at 100% scale, never stretched to fit. A stretched
image gives fractional modules and flaky scans. For runs of many labels, generate the
images with the bulk generator or the
keyless API and mail-merge them in the label
software.
Verify before you print fifty
Tape is expensive per centimetre. Print one label, scan it from ~15 cm with two phones, and confirm the payload matches with the validator logic — exact string, not just "a page opened". Then run the batch. Fifty mislabelled sample jars teach this lesson only once.

Can a Dymo LabelWriter print QR codes?
Yes — Dymo Connect has a QR object and imported PNGs work at exact pixel sizes. But LabelWriter labels are direct thermal paper: they fade within months in heat or light, so use them for short-lived labelling only.
What Brother tape width do I need for a QR code?
24 mm tape is the comfortable choice, fitting up to a version 7 code at reliable module sizes. 18 mm handles short URLs; on 12 mm tape even a version 1 code is marginal — use it for text and put the code elsewhere.
Why is the QR code from my label maker blurry?
Usually a stretched image: resizing a PNG to fit the label creates fractional modules on the printer's dot grid. Generate the image at the exact pixel size and place it unscaled, or use the app's built-in QR object.
Are P-touch QR labels durable?
Yes. TZe tape is thermal transfer under a clear laminate and resists water, abrasion and UV for years — far outlasting direct thermal paper labels from LabelWriter and QL machines.
