Laminate and varnish effects on QR code scanning
Matt laminate costs a few per cent of measured contrast and removes the glare that actually stops scans — the right default for handled or outdoor codes. Gloss finishes add a mirror at exactly the angle a phone holds. Spot UV varnish over a code is a known killer — flood-coat, or knock it out over the code and quiet zone.
What a finish changes, optically
A finish sits between the ink and the camera, and it alters two things: specular reflection (glare — a mirror image of light sources) and effective contrast (a translucent layer scatters a little light into dark modules, lifting their apparent lightness). Scanning lives and dies on both, and the finishes trade them differently.

Spot UV: the killer hiding in premium print
Spot UV lays a thick, raised, high-gloss varnish on selected artwork areas — and designers love applying it to the QR code, because the code is a graphic focal point. The result is a localised mirror bonded precisely to the modules: the code becomes an angle lottery, and under a phone flash it whites out. Add the slight yellowing some UV varnishes develop and the lens-like edge distortion of a thick deposit, and spot UV over a code is the most reliable way to break an otherwise perfect print job.
The fix is a one-line prepress instruction: "No spot UV over the QR code or its quiet zone — knock it out", supplied as an exclusion on the varnish layer. Or flood-coat the whole sheet matt and let the code live under the same finish as everything else. Put the line in your artwork handoff notes alongside the checks in the proofing workflow.
Laminate as protection — the part finishes get right
Against the glare risk, lamination is also the cheapest life-extension a printed code can buy: it seals ink against moisture, abrasion and handling, and a UV-inhibiting overlaminate slows the contrast erosion of sunlight by a couple of years. Outdoor and handled items — menus, badges, stickers — should be laminated matt as a rule. Unlaminated print on a table-service menu survives weeks; matt-laminated, years.
Test after finishing, not before
Lamination and varnish are applied after the proof most people check. A code verified on the flat proof can fail on the finished piece — so the scan test belongs at the end of the line: scan the laminated, varnished, trimmed article straight-on with flash forced, in dim light, with the scanner or a couple of real phones, and tick it off against the print checklist. Thirty seconds against a re-run of the whole job.
