Spot colour and Pantone QR codes

A QR code in one dark Pantone spot prints from a single plate, so edges stay crisp with no registration risk. The ink must be dark — keep at least a 40% luminance difference against the stock. Navies, deep reds and greens work; yellows, oranges, pastels and every metallic fail.

Why spot beats process for codes

A spot colour is one ink on one plate, and that buys a QR code two things CMYK cannot:

  1. No registration risk. A four-colour build fringes module edges whenever the plates drift; a single plate has nothing to drift against.
  2. Solid ink, not halftone. A CMYK approximation of a brand colour is screened — a rosette of dots — so a "solid" module is actually a texture, and its edge is a row of partial dots. Spot ink lays down as a continuous film with a clean edge, which matters most at small module sizes.

For a brand-coloured code on a stationery or packaging run that is already printing spot inks, putting the code on the brand plate is often the highest-fidelity option available.

Is the ink dark enough?

The rule is the same one that governs QR colours everywhere: the printed ink needs a luminance difference of at least 40% against the stock, dark on light. Hue is irrelevant; only darkness counts. By family:

Treat the table as triage, not clearance: ink on your stock is the only measurement that counts, so proof with a drawdown — uncoated stock in particular soaks and lightens ink films. Metallics: the guaranteed failure

Metallic inks carry aluminium or bronze flake, and flake reflects specularly — at some angles a metallic module flashes brighter than the paper around it. The decoder, thresholding luminance, sees dark modules at one tilt and bright ones a few degrees later. There is no size, EC level or lighting that fixes an ink whose darkness depends on angle; the same physics rules out foil blocking, which is why the pre-press checklist bans both. If the design demands metallic, print the surroundings metallic and the code itself in a flat dark ink on a light patch.

Proofing a spot-colour code

  • Get a drawdown on the production stock, not a digital simulation — screen previews of spot inks are approximations.
  • Scan the drawdown with several phones under the shop's lights and from the real distance (sized per the size calculator).
  • Validate the artwork before ink is even mixed — the file's geometry and contrast should be proven before the expensive variables enter.
