QR scanning on smart TVs

Smart TVs do not scan QR codes — they display them for a phone to scan. That is the standard pairing pattern: the TV shows a code, your phone scans it and signs the TV in. For a code on a TV watched from 3 m, make it at least 30 cm wide.

The TV is the poster, not the scanner

A television has no camera to scan with. A few early-2010s smart TVs shipped cameras for video calling; they disappeared, partly over privacy unease about a camera facing the sofa. Today's arrangement is settled and sensible: the TV displays the code, the phone in your hand scans it. Every "scan this on your TV" flow you meet is built on that division of labour.

The pairing pattern

The pattern you see in streaming apps works like this: the TV shows a QR code encoding an activation URL, usually with a short device code embedded or printed beside it. You scan it with your phone, sign in on the phone's browser — where you have a real keyboard, saved passwords and a password manager — and the TV session unlocks.

The reason is ergonomic, not technical. Entering a strong password with a D-pad on an on-screen keyboard means dozens of directional presses per character; a scan takes a few seconds. How big the code must be on screen

The 10:1 distance rule applies to screens exactly as it does to print: minimum code width ≈ viewing distance ÷ 10. Sofas sit 2–4 m from the screen, so the numbers get large quickly. On a 55-inch TV (about 122 × 68 cm of picture):

A code tucked into the corner of a broadcast graphic at 5 cm is decorative — nobody on a sofa can scan it without walking to the screen. Leave it on screen long enough

The viewer has to notice the code, find their phone, unlock it, open the camera and hold it steady — realistically 10 seconds or more end to end. A code that appears for five seconds in a programme trailer converts nobody. Guidance on timing is in minimum on-screen duration for a QR code.

Why TV remotes never got cameras

It occasionally gets asked, so: a camera would add cost to an accessory built down to a price, a lens in the living room is a privacy liability manufacturers have already been burned by, and everyone watching is holding a better camera with a better screen attached to their identity, payment methods and logins. The phone won this job permanently. Platforms that want an alternative route use companion apps, which do the scanning on the phone anyway.

When the phone will not read the TV

Scanning a code off any emissive screen brings its own failure modes — moiré from the pixel grid, glare from the panel, dim picture settings. If a pairing code refuses to scan, raise the TV's brightness, step closer than you think you need to, and tilt the phone a few degrees. The mechanics are covered in scanning a code off a monitor.

Can a smart TV scan a QR code?

No. TVs do not have cameras. The pattern runs the other way: the TV displays a QR code and your phone scans it, which is how streaming apps handle sign-in and pairing.

How big should a QR code be on a TV screen?

Use the 10:1 rule — code width of at least one tenth of the viewing distance. From a sofa 3 m away that means 30 cm, which is nearly half the height of a 55-inch screen. Corner overlays a few centimetres wide are too small to scan from seating distance.
