Can a QR code be round?

The underlying symbol must remain a square grid — that is what decoders sample. The rendering can look round: circular modules, round eyes, a circular logo and a circular frame outside the quiet zone all scan. Cropping the symbol itself into a circle cuts corner data modules and breaks the code.

The honest answer

Yes and no, and the distinction matters. The symbol — the grid of dark and light cells a decoder samples — must stay square: why QR codes are square covers the geometry. The rendering — the ink you put on each cell and around the code — has enormous freedom. Every "round QR code" that actually scans is a square grid wearing round clothes.

What can legitimately be round

  • The modules. A decoder samples the centre of each grid cell, so a dark circle drawn inside a cell reads exactly like a dark square, provided it is large enough that the sampled centre is unambiguous. This is the standard dot style; UseQR ships it as one of eight module shapes.
  • The eyes. Finder patterns are recognised by their 1:1:3:1:1 dark–light ratio scanned through the centre, and rounded or circular eye frames preserve that ratio. Fully circular eyes are the riskiest of the common stylings, but good renderers keep the ratio intact.
  • A logo. A circular centre logo is no different from a square one — it consumes error-correction budget by area.
  • The surroundings. A circular badge, sticker or frame is completely safe if the full four-module quiet zone sits between the outermost modules and the circle. The corners of the square symbol plus quiet zone must fit inside the circle — which means a round sticker needs a diameter of at least the code's diagonal, about 1.41 × the code width, not merely its width.

What breaks

  • Cropping the symbol into a circle. A circle inscribed in the code's square clips all four corners. Three corners hold finder patterns — unrecoverable at any error-correction level — and even a crop that spares the finders eats corner data modules and, in versions 2 and up, the alignment pattern near the fourth corner.
  • Warping the grid to fill a circle. Fisheye or polar distortions move module centres off the lattice the decoder reconstructs. Some heavily processed "artistic" codes survive by luck and error correction; most fail on the second-oldest phone in the room.
  • Shrinking dots too far. Dot modules that occupy too little of their cell leave the sampled centre dominated by background, and isolated single modules can vanish entirely. Keep dot diameter close to the full cell width rather than dainty.
  • Filling the quiet zone with the circle. A circular border drawn tight against the modules is the classic failure — the frame must clear the quiet zone on every side.

The test that settles it

Styling debt is invisible until a scanner refuses. Whatever roundness you apply, rasterise the final artwork and decode it — /validate renders and reads the code back with a real decoder, and /scan checks the finished file. If it decodes with a clean margin at the size you will print, the round look is free; if not, no amount of taste rescues it.

Is there such a thing as a circular QR code?

Not as a symbol — the data grid is square by specification. Codes that appear circular use round modules, round eyes and circular framing around an intact square grid. Anything that actually clips the grid into a circle stops being a valid QR code.

Can I put a QR code on a round sticker?

Yes. Fit the whole square — code plus four-module quiet zone — inside the circle, which needs a sticker diameter of at least 1.41 times the code width. Centring a 3 cm code on a 4.5 cm round sticker works comfortably.

Do round dots make a QR code harder to scan?

Slightly. Decoders sample cell centres, so generous dots scan like squares, but small dots reduce the dark area per cell and erode the margin. Keep dots near full cell width and verify the rendered result with a real decoder.

Why did my circular-cropped QR code stop working?

The crop removed the corners. Three of them contain finder patterns, which error correction cannot rebuild — without them the decoder cannot even locate the code, so the symbol fails completely rather than degrading gracefully.
