QR codes on banners and backdrops
Banners split into two jobs with different numbers. A step-and-repeat backdrop must survive inside photos taken at 2–3 m, needing a 25 cm code with strong contrast, while a street banner read at 5–15 m needs 50–150 cm. Use error correction Q and centre the code away from grommets.

One product, two completely different jobs. Size the code for the wrong one and it fails.
Mode 1: the photo backdrop
A step-and-repeat backdrop is not scanned in the room — it is scanned inside the photographs taken in front of it, often days later from someone's camera roll. That changes the requirement: the code must survive being photographed at 2–3 m, partially occluded by the people posing, then re-scanned from the photo at whatever resolution the shot preserved.
- ≥ 25 cm per code, and repeat it across the backdrop pattern so at least one instance escapes the people standing in front.
- Place codes at 1–2 m height — the band that stays in frame in a posed photo.
- Contrast matters double here: the code must clear the 40% luminance-difference floor after event lighting and photo compression have flattened it. Solid dark on solid light; never tone-on-tone with the logo wall.
- Event flash bounces off gloss vinyl — specify a matt finish.
Mode 2: the street banner
A banner across a fence, scaffold or high street is a small billboard, and the same ten-to-one arithmetic applies: readers at 5–15 m need a 50–150 cm code. On a standard 1 m-tall banner that means the code takes most of the banner's height — either give it that space or accept the code is decoration. The fabric failure modes
Banners are tensioned membranes, and tension is the enemy of a flat module grid:
- Wind ripple. Outdoor banners belly and flutter, curving the code in and out of plane. Wind slits reduce billow but each slit is a cut near modules — keep them outside the code and its quiet zone. Mesh banner stock ripples least but halves effective contrast; test before committing.
- Grommet tension. A banner hangs from its corners, and the fabric between grommets pulls into curved wrinkles that radiate inward. The distortion is worst near corners and edges — centre the code, at least 30 cm from any grommet line.
- A backdrop on a proper frame with the fabric pulled drum-tight has neither problem, which is one more reason backdrop codes can be smaller than street-banner codes.
Error correction Q is the budget for ripple, wrinkle and grime across both modes. Print from vector artwork — at 50 cm-plus, an upscaled PNG shows soft module edges that cost real margin.

How big should a QR code be on a step-and-repeat backdrop?
At least 25 cm per instance, repeated across the pattern at one to two metres of height. The code has to survive inside photographs taken from two to three metres away and still scan from the camera roll afterwards, which is a harder test than scanning in the room.
How big should a QR code be on a street banner?
Divide reading distance by ten: five to fifteen metres of distance means a 50–150 cm code. On a one-metre banner that is most of the height — commit the space, or leave the code off and keep the message readable instead.
Why does my banner QR code scan when flat but not once hung?
Tension distortion. Grommet pull wrinkles the corners and wind ripple curves the face, so modules move out of plane. Centre the code away from grommets, tension the banner evenly, and use error correction Q for margin.
Should a backdrop QR code be glossy or matt?
Matt, always. Event flash and stage lighting bounce off gloss vinyl as white glare that blanks the code in exactly the photographs it exists to be scanned from. Matt stock costs the same and removes the failure.
