QR codes for universities
Universities need QR codes on lecture slides, campus signage, club stalls and lab equipment. The lecture-slide code is the special case: back rows sit 15–20 m away, so students photograph the slide and scan the screenshot later — design the code to survive that, not a live scan.
The lecture-slide code is a special case
A lecture theatre puts the back row 15–20 m from the screen. The 10:1 rule would demand a code 1.5–2 m wide, which no slide provides. What actually happens is different: students photograph the slide and scan the screenshot later. Design for that:
- Short URL, so the code stays coarse. A version 3–4 code survives a blurry photo of a projection far better than a dense one.
- Pure black on white. Projectors compress contrast; coloured codes lose more.
- ≥ 15% of slide height, in a corner clear of the presenter's shadow.
- Print the URL as plain text underneath for anyone typing it later.
Orientation and wayfinding
New students navigate an unfamiliar campus for weeks. A code on building signage linking to the campus map with that building preselected beats a generic map link. Entrance and corridor signage is read from 1–2 m, so use 10–20 cm of code.
Clubs, events, signups
The freshers' fair is the densest QR environment on campus: dozens of societies, each wanting a signup list. Generate one code per society in bulk from a spreadsheet, and add a calendar code for taster sessions so the event lands in a diary rather than a forgotten flyer pile.
Lab equipment and SOPs
A laminated tag on each instrument — linking the standard operating procedure, the booking sheet, and a fault report with the asset ID prefilled — is the asset-tagging pattern applied to a lab. It retires the "where is the SOP binder" question permanently.
Who owns the template
A university prints thousands of posters a term from hundreds of independent groups. Without a standard you get low-contrast brand-colour codes and links to expired student hosting. Publish a one-page internal rule set: minimum sizes, colours that scan, official domains only — and share a generator link with the defaults already in the query string, so the template enforces itself.

Can students scan a QR code from the back of a lecture theatre?
Rarely in real time — at 15 m the 10:1 rule requires a code around 1.5 m wide. Most students photograph the slide instead and scan the photo afterwards, which works well provided the code is large, high-contrast and encodes a short URL.
How big should a QR code be on a lecture slide?
At least 15% of the slide's height, with the quiet zone kept clear. Bigger is better because the common path is scanning a photograph of the projection, and a small dense code does not survive that.
What should university QR codes link to?
Stable institutional URLs: the module page, the society signup, the campus map with a building preselected, the instrument's SOP. Avoid personal or student-society hosting that disappears at the end of the academic year.
